## Malenia, Blade of Miquella: Boss Overview
Malenia, Blade of Miquella (who becomes the Goddess of Rot in her second phase) is an optional demigod boss located at the bottom of **Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree**. She is widely considered one of the most difficult bosses in action RPG history due to her speed, high damage, and two unique mechanics:
* **Lifesteal:** Malenia heals a portion of her health every time she lands an attack on you or your Spirit Ashes—**even if you block the attack with a shield**.
* **Waterfowl Dance:** A devastating, multi-stage aerial slashing combo that can easily deplete a full health bar in seconds.

## Malenia’s Weaknesses and Resistances
To defeat Malenia, you must exploit her defensive vulnerabilities while avoiding elements she resists.
### Weaknesses
* **Low Poise:** Malenia has incredibly low poise (80 poise). She is easily staggered by heavy weapons, jump attacks, and specific Ashes of War (e.g., *Giant’s Hunt*, *Lion’s Claw*, or *Taker’s Flames*).
* **Frostbite (Highly Susceptible):** Triggering Frostbite deals 7% of her maximum HP instantly and lowers her damage negation by 20%. Furthermore, triggering Frostbite while she is mid-air will completely cancel her Waterfowl Dance.
* **Hemorrhage / Bleed (Susceptible):** Bleed builds up quickly on her, dealing massive chunk damage and interrupting her animations.
* **Fire Damage (Neutral):** She has no special resistance to Fire. Fire damage is highly effective, especially for resetting the Frostbite status cooldown so you can freeze her again.
### Resistances
* **Scarlet Rot & Poison (Extremely High):** Do not attempt to rot or poison her; she has massive resistance to both.
* **Holy Damage (High):** She has 40% Holy damage negation. Avoid using Holy-infused weapons or Holy incantations.

## Pre-Fight Preparation and Build Recommendations
### Recommended Character Stats
* **Vigor:** 50 to 60 (essential to survive her grab attack and mistakes during Waterfowl Dance).
* **Equip Load:** Aim for a **Light Roll** (under 30% equip load). Light rolling covers significantly more distance, making it much easier to escape her slashes and Waterfowl Dance.
### Top-Tier Weapons and Ashes of War
* **Blasphemous Blade:** Its skill, *Taker’s Flames*, deals high fire damage, knocks Malenia flat on her back, and heals you upon hitting her.
* **Rivers of Blood / Blood-infused Dual Katanas:** Rapidly triggers Hemorrhage, which staggers her and drains her health bar.
* **Dark Moon Greatsword:** Deals heavy magic and poise damage while easily applying Frostbite from a safe distance.
* **Any Colossal Weapon with “Giant’s Hunt”:** This Ash of War repeatedly launches Malenia into the air, allowing you to loop her into a near-constant state of knockdown.
### Essential Consumables
* **Freezing Pots:** Crucial for canceling her Waterfowl Dance.
* *How to get:* Acquire **Glintstone Craftsman’s Cookbook [6]** from Caria Manor.
* *Recipe:* 1 Ritual Pot + 2 Rimed Crystal Buds.
* **Preserving Boluses:** To cure Scarlet Rot during Phase 2.
### Spirit Ashes (If Using Summoning)
* **Mimic Tear:** Equip your strongest Bleed or Frost build, summon the Mimic, and coordinate your attacks to keep Malenia permanently staggered.
* **Black Knife Tiche:** Tiche is highly evasive, knocks Malenia down with her sweeps, and her projectile reduces Malenia’s maximum HP while dealing damage over time.

## How to Counter and Dodge “Waterfowl Dance”
When Malenia jumps high into the air and hovers for a moment, she is preparing her Waterfowl Dance. You must react immediately using one of these three methods:
### Method 1: The Freezing Pot Cancel (Easiest)
As soon as Malenia rises into the air, lock onto her and throw a **Freezing Pot**. The instant frostbite buildup will stagger her out of the air, completely canceling the attack.
* *Note:* This works up to two or three times. After that, her Frostbite resistance becomes too high to trigger from a single pot.
### Method 2: The Sprint and Roll Method (No Items Required)
Waterfowl Dance consists of three distinct flurries:
1. **First Flurry:** As soon as she rises, turn around and **sprint away** from her. Jump at the very end of her first dash to gain extra distance and avoid the lingering hitboxes.
2. **Second Flurry:** As she prepares the second dash, unlock your camera (optional but helpful) and **roll directly through/into her** just as she begins to move. She will fly past you.
3. **Third Flurry:** As she starts the third dash, **roll toward her once**, then immediately **roll backward** or walk away. The camera will auto-adjust as she finishes her final slashes safely away from you.
### Method 3: The Shield Block Method (Safest for Survival)
Equip a Greatshield with 100% Physical Damage Negation (such as the *Fingerprint Stone Shield* or *Brass Shield* with *Barricade Shield* Ash of War).
1. Hold block to absorb the entirety of the **first flurry**.
2. **Roll forward** through the second flurry.
3. **Roll backward** away from the third flurry.
* *Caveat:* Malenia will heal slightly from blocking the first flurry, but you will survive the attack with zero damage taken.

## Phase 1 Strategy: Blade of Miquella
During Phase 1, Malenia is relatively passive and will slowly walk toward you unless you attack or heal.
* **Play Patiently:** Do not attack her while she is neutral. Wait for her to commit to an attack, dodge it, and punish her recovery frames.
* **Punish Her Low Poise:** Use heavy jumping attacks, charged attacks, or heavy Ashes of War to stagger her. If you are using a fast weapon (like a Katana), limit your combos to 2–3 hits; she will eventually deflect your attack with a distinct “ping” sound and counter-attack.
* **Dodge the Grab Attack:** When she darts backward, clicks her prosthetic arm, and lunges forward, she is attempting a grab. **Roll backward or to the right** with a slight delay. Getting caught in this grab deals massive physical damage and heals her significantly.
* **The Triple Slash:** When her prosthetic arm sparks with a gold/orange light, she will perform a quick triple-slash followed by a final heavy slash. Roll forward-right through the initial slashes, then roll behind her to punish the final strike.

## Phase 2 Strategy: Goddess of Rot
In Phase 2, Malenia becomes much more aggressive, her attacks deal Scarlet Rot buildup, and she gains several new moves.
### Countering “Scarlet Aeonia” (The Bloom)
Phase 2 always begins with this attack. She will dive from the sky, crash into the ground, and bloom into a massive orange flower that inflicts rapid Scarlet Rot and explosive damage.
1. **How to Dodge:** As she dives toward you, unlock your camera, run directly underneath her, and roll forward just as she impacts the ground.
2. **Run Away:** Immediately sprint away from the blooming flower to avoid the explosion and the lingering rot mist.
3. **How to Punish:** While she is recovering inside the flower (which lasts about 5–7 seconds), she is completely stationary. Use this time to cast ranged spells, throw Freezing/Fire Pots, or use ranged Ashes of War.
### Countering the “Phantom Spirits” Attack
When Malenia hovers high in the air surrounded by pink spirits, she will send out several phantom clones of herself to strike you in rapid succession.
* **How to Dodge:** Immediately sprint backward to put distance between you and Malenia.
* Dodge the first two phantoms by rolling to the left.
* Dodge the third and fourth phantoms by rolling to the right.
* Dodge the fifth phantom (which comes from a different angle) by rolling forward.
* Finally, delay your roll slightly to dodge Malenia herself as she dives down for a final thrust.
### General Phase 2 Tips
* **Keep Your Distance:** Malenia is far more aggressive in this phase and will frequently cancel her stagger animations into hyper-armor kicks or wings-assisted slashes.
* **Look for Openings:** Her jump-slam attacks now create a secondary Scarlet Rot explosion on the ground. Wait for the explosion to detonate before rolling in to punish her recovery.
