In “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim,” the winged, fire-breathing creatures are consistently referred to as **dragons**. Within the game’s lore, they are also known as “Dov” in their native tongue, Dovahzul.
These powerful beings are central to the game’s narrative, with the main story revolving around the player character, the Dragonborn, and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, the most powerful of Akatosh’s children. Dragons are often considered the immortal children of Akatosh, the Dragon God of Time, and are believed to have existed since before Nirn came into being.
While some external discussions debate whether Skyrim’s dragons technically fit the definition of “wyverns” due to their two legs and wings instead of four legs and wings, within the universe of The Elder Scrolls, they are unequivocally called dragons. Their names, such as Alduin (“Destroyer-Devour-Master”), Mirmulnir (“Allegiance-Strong-Hunt”), and Paarthurnax (“Ambition-Overlord-Cruelty”), are composed of three words in the dragon tongue, reflecting their nature and power.
